Dates Chutney

Chutney is a perfect accompaniment that is fragrant & colorful to wake up even the blandest dishes. Well here I am talking about a sweet variation which would be the perfect addition to a spicy main dish like Biryani. My amma used to make one with roasted onions, cashews and raisins but I found making this chutney a lot easier (on effort and pocket!). So friends make this ahead in time and let it rest in the refrigerator until you are ready with hot steaming Biryani and crisp poppadoms.

Dates Chutney
Recipe adapted from pachakam
Dates Chutney in a Jar

Ingredients:
Small piece Tamarind
1/2 Tbsp Jaggery, powdered
1 Tbsp Gingelly oil
Few Mustard seeds
Few Fenugreek seeds
1/4 cup Onion, finely chopped
Small piece Ginger, chopped
3 cloves Garlic, chopped
2 Green chillies, finely chopped
1 1/2 tsp Chilly powder
1/2 cup Dates (original recipe asked for minced but I used fresh dates and it combined very well on cooking)
Salt, to taste

Method:
  • Soak tamarind in little water and add powdered jaggery. Sieve the tamarind plus jaggery extract and collect it in a bowl.
  • Heat gingelly oil and splutter mustard and fenugreek seeds.
  • Add chopped onion, ginger, garlic, green chillies and saute for a few minutes.
  • Lower the flame and add chilly powder, tamarind extract and required salt.
  • Finally, add dates and cook in low fire until done. Remove from fire and allow it to cool.
Notes : On cooling store the dates chutney in a clean and dry glass jar. Refrigerate for longer period of storage.
